Regent Hospital scam: Ex-DG of DGHS leaves court without surrendering

Director general in the past of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Abul Kalam Azad left the Dhaka Court today with no surrender or getting bail in the case in connection with the Regent Hospital scam, although this was the main reason for his trip to court.

Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Public Prosecutor Mir Ahmed Ali Salam confirmed the report according to The Daily Star.

"We learnt that former DGHS boss Azad came to the court of Dhaka's Senior Special Judge KM Emrul Kayesh but he did not file any bail petition with the court," the judge said.

Witnesses reported that Abul Kalam Azad went to the Senior Special Judge's Court of Dhaka around 11am to surrender to the court in order to apply for bail, but he was unable to leave the courtroom without making his way to the front.

State lawyer Salam also said that it's not known the reason Azad was not able to appear before the court today.

On September 30th, ACC Deputy Director Farid Ahmed Patwary was also the investigator in the case, presented an accusation to the senior Special Judge's Court of Dhaka against Abul Kalam Azad as well as five other people in the case involving the embezzlement of government funds.

The other five include Regent Group chairman Mohammad Shahed, DGHS former director (hospitals and clinics) Dr Aminul Hasan and deputy director (hospital-1) Md Md Younus Ali, assistant director (hospital-1) Dr Md Shafiur Rahman and research officer Dr Md Didarul Islam.

The court then set November 2 to hear whether to accept the charge or not.
